Engagement Sessions

There is something truly special about the span of time that you’re engaged. Your relationship becomes suddenly more purposeful, more intricate, and more meaningful when you know you’re going to spend the rest of your life with the person you love. What started as great chemistry and good times is turning into something deeper…love that is planted like a seed in the ground, ready to sprout up and bloom in full beauty at just the right time.

We love capturing couples in love, and find that engagement sessions are also a fantastic way to get to know you and learn about how to draw out the best of your personality in front of the camera. It’s almost like a trial run for your wedding day…without the stress!

Here are some great ways that you can enjoy your engagement photos:

  • Custom Save-the-Date cards
  • Custom-designed Guest Sign-in Book (Photo Guest Book)
  • Large archival prints for the walls of your home
  • Mini Gift Books that you can give to your wedding party attendants
  • Photo Magnets (as Save-the-Dates, or just because!)

In planning for your engagement session, think about details, props, and locations that are significant or sentimental in your relationship, and we’ll talk about ways to incorporate them into your session. Check out our Session FAQ for more information about portrait sessions.

LIFE SESSIONS: FAMILY & CHILD PHOTOGRAPHY

We love to document families as they grow, and are committed to capturing children as naturally as possible. When you come to a session, we want you to be at ease. Play with your child. Giggle. Smile. Run. Play. It's all about fun!

Family Portrait session fees include a one hour session on-location within 30 miles of 98133 and the high-resolution digital files of the final images from your session. We occasionally announce special dates for mini-sessions a few times throughout the year.

We are also available to cover birthday parties and big family milestones on an hourly basis. Please contact us about your event details, and we will provide you a custom quote for your event.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT PORTRAIT SESSIONS

When is the best time to take our engagement photos?

It's completely up to you when you'd like to do your engagement session, but if you would like to incorporate engagement pictures into your save-the-date cards or invitations, it is best to do your session 3-6 months in advance of your wedding date.

What is the best time of day for our session?

Most photographers agree that the 1-2 hours before sunset is perfectly dreamy light for engagement photos. We definitely love that time as well, but depending on your schedule and the location(s) we choose for your session, we may have a different recommendation. For family sessions, families with small children may find that early to mid-morning is a better fit for fresh-faced, happy kids. The time to avoid is when the sun is directly overhead, casting harsh shadows over a subject's face. If you have any concerns about scheduling, please talk to us. We're flexible!

How much time should we allow for our session?

Each session varies, but we typically shoot engagement sessions within 60-90 minutes. We always come to sessions ready to make marvelous pictures, and if we're having too much fun we might just continue on past the allotted session time. Only if you want to, though! Family sessions might be a bit shorter, depending on the attention span and interest of the kids. We try to be completely flexible to the needs of each client.

What should we do to prepare for our session?

In advance, we love to have an in-person or phone consultation to talk about some unique ideas and details to incorporate into your session that highlight sentimental things about your relationship or family dynamic. During that consultation, we'll make recommendations regarding wardrobe, makeup, location choices, and more. In general, be prepared to come to your session looking and feeling fabulous, and we'll be off to a good start!

About how many photos will we receive from our session?

Portrait sessions have a completely different feel than a wedding that unfolds throughout a day, and likewise, our photographic coverage takes on a slightly different purpose at both engagement and family portrait sessions. During a session, we want to deliver you a creative and selective set of images for you to display on your wall (or to enjoy in various other ways), and although we have sometimes captured many more pictures, we typically proof 35-50 finished images for you.

How soon after the session will I be able to see my photographs?

We proof all session images within 2 weeks of your session, and often sooner if our schedule allows. We will contact you when your photos are ready to view.

What happens if the weather doesn't cooperate on the day of our session?

As natives of the Pacific Northwest, we know how unpredictable the weather can be here. If we suspect any serious weather-related issues in the days leading up to your session that would preclude us from having a great outcome, we'll give you a call and reschedule.

What if I have a child who is sick?

If you have a child who is sick, please do not bring them to your session. Please call us at least 12 hours in advance if you will not be able to make it to your session due to illness, and we'll reschedule you for a later time.

How do I book a family or engagement portrait session?

Just send us a note and let us know! We'll send along a link to our Client Lounge area where you can book your session, electronically sign a model release, and make the payment for your session (for sessions that are not in conjunction with your booked wedding collection). Session payment is due at the time of booking to reserve your time.

WHAT PEOPLE HAVE TO SAY ABOUT WORKING WITH US
"Solace Arts has photographed several family events for us within the past year including the birth of twins, high school senior pictures, Christmas Day celebration and two weddings. We have been incredibly pleased with their outstanding service and detail for design. Not to forget to mention their quiet, thoughtful demeanor, reducing the level of stress at these type of events. The finished product always makes us smile. Thank you Emily and Kolby. Looking forward to sharing many more memorable moments in the future."
Jennifer H., Mother of the Bride | Bend, OR
"We were very happy with the session and photos by Solace Arts. They were flexible with our schedules, open to a variety of photo locations and able to work with our young children and keep them interested. They also gave us some great tips on how to relax and how to prepare for our session. We are very happy with their service!"
Daniele & Miguel A., Los Angeles, CA
"Our Christmas family portraits came out great! We have a 3 year old and a 4 month old, so not only does Emily have to navigate the nuances of good photography, but she has to wrangle two squirmy kids and get them to look great. She does both with ease, and knows exactly when to snap the shutter to capture those special moments of expression."
